The 6th International Assembly for Formators took a memorable turn as participants stepped outside the conference hall and into history. Resource person Sr. Anna Damas, SSpS (Congregational Historical Researcher), guided the group on a walking tour through the very places where the congregation’s story began.
The group explored significant spots at the SVD St. Michael Mission House and the SSpS Motherhouse, Convent of the Sacred Heart—the very grounds where the first Mothers and Sisters lived, prayed, and worked. As they walked, Sr. Anna brought their world to life with stories of the founding generation. These were not just tales of perfect harmony, but honest accounts of unity in the midst of diversity. Participants heard about moments of inclusion and exclusion, of differing opinions and community tensions. It was an inspiring look at how St. Arnold Janssen’s missionary vision took shape through real struggles and adjustments. The tour revealed how he worked to find a path forward, navigating challenges to build a uniting vision for the mission.
Lessons in Formation from Mother Theresia Messner
Back in the conference hall, participants took a few quiet moments to reflect on the morning’s journey. Each sister jotted down what struck her most about the founding generation and what it might mean for formators today. These insights were then shared in small groups.
The focus then shifted to a key figure from the congregation’s history: Mother Theresia Messner and her remarkable “talent for guidance.” Sr. Anna invited the sisters to look inward and consider how their own approaches to formation might reflect the example she set.
Through stories of Mother Theresia’s life, the group saw her deep compassion and patience in action. Sr. Anna shared her thoughts and advice on accompanying sisters through difficulties, painting a picture of a leader who served with a wise and understanding heart. The reflection concluded with the assembly praying together, in plenum, Mother Theresia’s own prayer for wise and selfless leaders for the congregation.
A Moment of Gratitude
The day ended on a deeply spiritual note. The sisters gathered quietly at the cemetery by Mother Theresia’s grave. Standing together in that sacred space, offering spontaneous prayers of intercession and thanksgiving—a simple but powerful way to honor her legacy and the journey they assembly participants are on together.
