1. Postulancy (Pre-Novitiate)
Postulancy is the first stage of the journey — a time of gradual getting-to-know: yourself, the community, and the life of the Congregation. Living together, postulants grow toward human and Christian maturity through prayer, study, work, and active participation in apostolic life.
Scripture reading, days of recollection, and retreats deepen their bond with Christ and strengthen their motivation for vocation. Each day offers opportunities to learn the spirituality, charism, and lifestyle of the SSpS, and to take part in the sisters’ apostolates.
Visiting and Exploring
Throughout the year, we also invite young women who are curious but not yet ready to commit to individual retreats, informal visits, and a week-long community experience at SSpS convents and communities — a time of prayer, shared work, honest conversation, and staying close to the Lord.
2. Novitiate
The novitiate is comparable to a time of engagement. In our Congregation, it lasts two years and is currently held in Ireland (the European Novitiate). It concludes with the profession of temporary vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience.
The primary goal of the novitiate is preparation for vows. By gazing upon Christ — chaste, poor, and obedient — the novice learns to imitate Him through the evangelical counsels. This is still a period of discernment and deepening, accomplished through daily Eucharist, prayer, community life, apostolate, study, and regular individual formation conversations with the Novice Directress.
3. Juniorate
The juniorate covers the period from first to perpetual profession — approximately six years. During this time, a sister participates in the life and apostolic work of the Congregation while continuing to grow in faith and readiness for missionary service.
Sisters in juniorate learn to integrate prayer, work, study, community life, and rest. They deepen professional and language skills, grow in the ability to live and collaborate in community, and prepare for direct missionary service. It is a period of continuous formation — personal, spiritual, and apostolic.
4. Perpetual Profession
Perpetual profession is an act of covenant by which a sister gives herself forever to God — loved above all else — and binds herself to the Congregation and its mission, whether in her home country or abroad.
Immediate preparation lasts approximately nine months. During this time, the sister reflects on God’s loving guidance throughout her life and ministry, devotes herself more deeply to prayer and study, and receives her missionary assignment. The outward sign of her permanent dedication is a ring bearing the symbol of the Holy Spirit.
After perpetual profession, formation continues. Ongoing spiritual renewal and professional development are essential for each sister to serve effectively and to grow ever closer to the One she has chosen.
