Sisters from Indonesia, Timor Leste, and the US embark on a three-month formator course in Bello, Kupang City ‘With Jesus on the Road to Emmaus’
On the day of the Resurrection, two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus seven miles away. Jesus joins them on the road. Confused and dejected, they did not recognize Him. The Stranger asked what they were talking about. When they expressed grief over their Master’s death and reports of an empty tomb, He admonished them for being “slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.”
Last July 5, 19 Sisters from Indonesia, Timor Leste and the United States embarked on a three-month formator course in Bello, a neighborhood in Kupang City, capital of West Timor. Drawing on their personal and community experiences, their ministries and hopes for the course, the participants choose the theme, “With Jesus on the Road to Emmaus: Accompanying, Enkindling, and Sending.”
The course— coordinated by Sr. Hubertine Menge, SSpS (West Flores Province), with Sr. Teresa Lina, SSpS (Java Province), and with Sr. Filomena Bui (Timor Province) as course therapist— concludes on October 4, 2026.
Participants receive a wide range of inputs on community and personal growth, including the spirituality and charism of the congregation, emotional intelligence and interculturality. They also learn practical skills like public speaking, and get to explore ways to address mental health concerns and post-traumatic stress among formandi.
These inputs are intended to help participants become formators who are first able to accompany and form themselves, then accompany their own formandi and contribute to the life of their communities. Ultimately, the course seeks to equip them to serve as formators across generations and cultures— all of which goes back to the encompassing Biblical theme.
