More than 100 VIVAT members gathered online June 22-23 to weave together grassroots testimonies on migration and human rights with strategic advocacy at the United Nations.
News from VIVAT International
Every year, the VIVAT Board of Trustees organizes the VIVAT International Annual Meeting for different stakeholders of VIVAT, especially for those engaged in the ministry of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation. This year, held online on June 22-23, it brought together more than 100 members from around the world to reflect on migration, human rights, and VIVAT’s mission of advocacy rooted in compassionate presence.
Opening keynote: A global overview of refugee rights
The meeting opened with prayer and words of welcome from Sr. Miriam Altenhofen, SSpS, VIVAT President. Keynote speaker Stéphane Jaquemet from the International Catholic Migration Commission offered a global overview of the rights of refugees and migrants, highlighting the erosion of international commitments, the rise of anti-migrant politics, and the disproportionate burden borne by low-income countries hosting displaced people.
Grassroots testimonies: Food insecurity, detention, and family separation
Testimonies from different VIVAT member congregations working in Uganda (MCCJ), Mexico (SSpS), Tanzania (CSSp), India (ASC), USA (MSCS), and Poland (SVD) gave voice to the realities of food insecurity, legal uncertainty, detention, and family separation. They also shared hopeful responses through legal aid, shelters, skills training, women’s empowerment, and collaboration with civil society partners and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Day two: Faith-based advocacy at the United Nations
The second day focused on advocacy at the United Nations. Cecilie Kern presented the Global Compact for Migration and emphasized the essential role of faith-based organizations in ensuring that international advocacy reflects migrants’ lived experiences.
Reports from VIVAT Team members Sr. Marides Santos, SSpS, and Fr. Roy Thomas, SVD (New York), and Fr. Fabian/Kachi Adindu, CSSp (Geneva), highlighted VIVAT’s engagement in UN processes through advocacy, networking, and capacity building. Sr. Gretta Fernandes, SSpS, gave an overview of VIVAT, especially the recent changes in the organizational structure. She encouraged participants to strengthen VIVAT advocacy by networking with VIVAT member congregations at the country level. She asked the members to take advantage of internship opportunities either in Geneva or New York. VIVAT members from Paraguay (on indigenous land rights) and Papua New Guinea (on sorcery accusation-related violence) demonstrated how local concerns contribute to global action. Their advocacy work is the fruit of networking among VIVAT members at the country level. Sr. Gretta pointed out that in order to take local reality to global advocacy, we must organize ourselves at the grassroots.
Gratitude and closing
Sr. Gretta thanked the VIVAT Team, Advisory Board, contact persons, and particularly all those who presented their work at the grassroots. Sr. Miriam thanked all, especially Sr. Gretta, for the preparations in organizing the two-day annual meeting.
