The Protection of Minors in the Church

Responsibility, Accountability and Transparency

The first meeting of its kind was held in the Vatican from February 21-24 2019.  There were 190 participants composed of presidents of the bishops’ conferences and Superiors General of religious congregations. As a member of the UISG (Unione Internazionale di Superiore Generale – Internationnal Union of Superiors General) Board, our Congregational Leader – Sr. Maria Theresia Hörnemann was one of them.

A significant feature of this meeting was the presence of victim-survivors who gave testimonies to their horrendous experiences. The summit aimed to make sure that everyone in the Church around the globe – in every culture – understand their responsibilities for child protection as well as what it means for bishops and religious superiors to own this issue and be accountable for it.

“If one member suffers, all the members suffer together” (1 Cor 12:26)

In the wake of the alarming news that keep coming from different countries about sexual abuse of minors in the Church, this summit has great significance as it deals with our responsibility, accountability and transparency in this matter.
