In a historic ceremony unifying five provinces and regions, Sr. Miriam Altenhofen installed the leadership team of the new SSpS European Province with a message of hope, trust, and shared responsibility
Sr. Miriam framed the event as a sacred milestone and a “profound leap of faith.” She reflected that the new province, born from a long journey of shared discernment, represents five unique histories, languages, and memories stepping forward into one united reality. This moment, she noted, is naturally woven with both gratitude for the rich missionary past and vulnerability in facing an unknown future—a decision to trust that the Spirit who has guided the congregation remains faithfully at work.
Leadership as Creating Space for Communal Discernment
Addressing the newly installed team—Provincial Sr. Anna-Maria Kofler and Provincial Councillors Srs. Ewa Pliszczak, Veronica Lili Purwanti, Debra Sithobekile Ncube, Hemma Jaschke, and Christine Müller—Sr. Miriam emphasized that their leadership is not about having all the answers. Instead, she defined it as the sacred task of creating space for communal discernment, dialogue, and shared responsibility. The diversity of their experiences and cultures, she affirmed, is not a weakness but a gift that will allow them to model the very unity in diversity the province is called to embody.
Authority Rooted in Service and Accompaniment
Drawing on the wisdom of Pope Francis, Sr. Miriam reminded all present that true authority in religious life flows from service, availability, and compassionate accompaniment. She entrusted the team with guiding the province through a delicate transition, holding together memory and future, and encouraging hope and participation among all sisters.
Entrusted to the Spirit for the Journey Ahead
Sr. Miriam concluded by entrusting the new beginning to the Holy Spirit, praying for the gifts of wisdom, courage, patience, and joy. She expressed confidence that, through the service of this leadership team and the engaged commitment of every sister, the new province will find its rhythm and continue to be a credible sign of God’s loving presence in Europe and beyond
