October is set aside as a special month of prayer for the missions. World Mission Sunday will be observed on October 18, 2026, with the theme “One in Christ, united in Mission.” The worldwide celebration in 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of this day’s establishment by Pope Pius XI. In his appeal this year in support of World Mission Sunday, Pope Leo emphasized that it is a special opportunity for the whole Church to pray for missionaries and for the fruitfulness of their apostolic work.
Union with Christ
Union with Christ is the heart of mission. Jesus prayed all may be one (John 17:21), revealing the Church as communion serving fraternity and harmony with creation. The Church’s primary missionary duty is renewing spiritual and fraternal unity; evangelization needs reconciled hearts. Being one in Christ means keeping the Lord central, so “it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Greater unity enables shared mission.
United in Mission
Unity is not an end in itself but is directed toward mission, so the world may believe. The witness of a reconciled, fraternal, united community gives the Gospel full power. No baptized person is exempt; each participates according to vocation.
Mission to Love
Love is the essence of mission: the Good News is God’s faithful love made flesh in Jesus. The Church continues Christ’s mission in the Holy Spirit—born of love, lived in love, leading to love.
