Three SSpS sisters embarked on a unique journey to Kinshasa, Congo, traveling by boat and flight to begin their mission. Their experience was marked by trust in God, excitement, and the anticipation of learning the local language and exploring their new mission field.
When we think of a journey, many things come to mind—traveling by vehicle, flight, or boat. For us, Sr. Diana Wilbrorda, Sr. Estella Marie, and Sr. Juliet Rego, the journey was by boat, while Sr. Kristina Wolla and Sr. Catherine Horimbari took a flight.
In Congo, where we embarked on this pioneering mission, traveling by boat for 11 hours was a unique experience filled with many questions, uncertainties, and moments of discouragement. Yet, we placed our trust in the Lord Jesus and in Mother Mary to guide us on this journey. The three of us stood firm, embracing the challenges and excitement that came with this adventure. For me personally, it was a joy and thrill, as it was my first time traveling by boat in a foreign land.
After a short prayer and farewells from our sisters, we set out at 5 a.m. from St. Paul, the SVD House, to the port of Kinkole Bandundu. Our actual journey began at 8 a.m. after being provided with life jackets. By then, our initial excitement had settled into calm anticipation. As we moved forward, we prayed and learned about the new places we were passing, including the three rivers—the Kiwlu, Kesai, and Kwango—merging into one. It was a beautiful sight, watching the different waters blend together.
Along the way, we saw numerous boats loaded with goods such as oil, diesel, petrol, charcoal, and people. This gave us insight into the daily lives of the local people as they traveled from smaller cities to the capital. Traveling by speedboat, we conversed with the people and admired the surroundings, praising God for His creation. The captain, two skippers, a mechanic, and two assistants handled the boat with confidence, ensuring a smooth journey.
The trip was beyond my imagination—calm, peaceful, and relaxing. We didn’t feel anxious or fatigued, and we even managed to take a refreshing nap. By the end of the journey, we felt rejuvenated and ready for our new mission in Congo, eager to witness and experience all that awaited us.
On the same day, September 24th, all five of us arrived in Kinshasa at Route 15, Maison de Arnold Janssen, to begin our local language studies in Lingala. We look forward to exploring our mission in and around Kinshasa, knowing that the God of missions is with us. Jesus, our love, walks with us, and Mother Mary stays by our side in all our endeavors.
