The SSpS in Ukraine have adapted their ministry to meet the immense needs caused by the war, providing both humanitarian aid and spiritual support to those affected. Through their efforts, many Ukrainians are finding faith and hope in God during these challenging times.
With the outbreak of war on February 24, 2022, life in Ukraine changed drastically, as did our ministry. The scale of the humanitarian crisis called for immediate action. With support from SSpS and other benefactors, we expanded our efforts to assist those affected by the conflict.
We provided aid to individuals, hospitals, schools, and military units, and delivered supplies to frontline areas. Through the generosity of many, we distributed medicine, medical equipment, power generators, and food. Thousands of parcels containing essential items were sent across Ukraine, particularly to the eastern regions.
Our work combines material support with spiritual care, a mission that brings deep meaning to our lives. Even amid war’s sorrow, we encourage Ukrainians to trust in a loving God, who is present in their struggles. Many have come to know God through this experience, especially those who had not regularly practiced their faith before.
In our convent in Verbovets, we welcomed people fleeing war zones. Some stayed briefly, while others lived with us for a year. Many of our guests, baptized in the Orthodox Church, were not in the habit of attending the holy mass. During their time with us, they grew in faith, attending mass regularly and receiving the Holy Sacraments.
Our ministry in Ukraine extends beyond social assistance. It is about leading people to God, even in the midst of danger. We focus on catechizing children, organizing retreats, offering psychological help, and producing radio programs. The summer camps, known as “holidays with God,” provide children an escape from the harshness of war, while nurturing their spiritual growth. We believe these children will be vital in rebuilding Ukraine—materially, spiritually, and morally—when peace returns. We continue to pray for peace, not only in Ukraine but across the world.
