Sisters in Flores are confirmed safe despite extensive damage to their facilities and family homes, while patients at Kewapante Hospital have been evacuated to tents following the morning’s powerful earthquake.
A major earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the island of Flores early morning of August 15, 2026, at approximately 6:00 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located near Mbay in the Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara province. The tremor, which lasted for an extended period, was felt across Flores Island and in parts of Sumba, Adonara, and Solor islands.
The SSpS communities in the western region of Flores are reported safe. Sisters in the communities of Ende, Ratedao, Maukaro, Ndora, and Mataloko are also confirmed safe. At the SSpS house in Ratedao, the rear section sustained significant damage; however, all sisters there are unharmed.
In the Maumere area, the sick and elderly sisters are safe. As a precautionary measure, tents have been set up in front of the Kewapante convent courtyard to serve as temporary shelter.
Some family members of the SSpS were affected like the mother of Sr. Hironima Wela and Sr. Agnes Deram who suffered head injuries due to a building collapse at Maumere Harbor. Sr. Hironima was at the harbor preparing to board a boat to Lembata for a vacation when the incident occurred. The medical team at Kewapante Hospital attended to her.
Families of the sisters in the western region are safe, but numerous family homes have collapsed or sustained severe damage.
At Kewapante Hospital, approximately 61 patients are being treated and have been evacuated to the central courtyard, where tents have been set up. Amid the panic caused by the earthquake, a mother gave birth safely at a local herbal medicine shop, with assistance from the sisters and the maternity medical team. The congregation expressed gratitude for the tents provided by the police for the patients at the hospital.
The situation has calmed somewhat, but remains on alert. Aftershocks are still occurring in the Nagekeo region, though on a smaller scale. Residents remain in safe areas away from the coast.
The congregation requests prayers for protection and strength during this difficult time.
