On March 14th, the SSpS Formation Assembly explored how the congregation, as followers of St. Arnold Janssen, should respond to today’s media and technology landscape.
The session opened with a reminder that the Founder was a communication pioneer. Fr. Jürgen Ommerborn, SVD, illustrated how St. Arnold used publications to connect people and spread the Gospel. If he were here today, he would surely urge the congregation to embrace modern tools for good.
Next, Ms. Cindy Gorospe Anonuevo (joining via Zoom) explained how different generations engage with media. For young people today, technology is not merely a tool—it is where they find connection, form identity, and even support social causes. This reality calls formators to recognize the digital world as a genuine missionary space that shapes those in their care.
Sr. Elaine Faith Taneo, SSpS, then led a discussion on both the benefits and dangers of media. While technology fosters connection and supports spiritual, community, and missionary life, it also presents risks such as addiction and challenges to the vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity. Research shows that excessive screen time can even alter brain development.
The assembly affirmed that the SSpS formation program requires clear guidelines for using media and technology, which should be integrated into the Manual for Formation. Key areas for consideration include the use of phones, social media, and the internet.
Most importantly, the goal is not to forbid but to form. The congregation must teach responsible, discerned and critical use rather than drive practices underground. Guidelines should protect sisters, form their hearts, and prepare them for mission in an increasingly digital world.
