Day 2
Lent is traditionally the season of fasting, yet our fasting must transcend the merely personal. “The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all” (Laudato Si’, 23). When we fast from carbon, we fast from the illusion of private salvation. The desert fathers fled to the wilderness to escape the corruption of the city; we must enter the wilderness of our over-consumption to find the city of God. Thomas Merton warned that we are “no longer in a world of spirits but of commodities.” Today, let us fast from the commodity that is killing the climate— perhaps the automobile, the single-use plastic, or the mindless scroll that fuels digital carbon footprints.
