Building Just Relationships
Sr. Petronella Boonen (JPIC Brazil North) guided participants on an integral approach to Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC). Building just relationships is an invitation to internalize JPIC as a central dimension of missionary life. Using the iceberg metaphor, Sr. Petronella challenged formators to look beyond surface-level injustices to hidden structures like cultural trauma. Injustice stems from interconnected roots, and the response is not merely alleviating suffering but actively practicing justice. Exploring power dynamics, the group distinguished “power to” from “power over.” Sr. Petronella noted the paradox of trust forming quickly among strangers yet lacking in communities, urging vulnerability and deep listening as foundations for just relationships.
JPIC as the Atmosphere of Formation
Sr. Adriana Milmanda (Mission Secretary) drew from Guide us in your Justice (2025), emphasizing JPIC as the “very atmosphere of formation” where contemplation and action become one path. Religious life holds a privileged position to respond to injustice, called to denounce and promote social virtues. The 2012 JPIC Seminar’s vision remains vital: JPIC as a way of life embracing non-violence and networking across provinces. Traces of JPIC were found throughout the six directions of the 15th General Chapter. In preparation for a mission exposure, formators were invited to observe justice through the lens of gestures, power dynamics, and structural impact.
The Two Feet of Love in Action
Reflecting on the TAK mission exposure, formators witnessed radical equality and “power with” rather than “power over.” The project embodied justice by giving people dignity and meaning. Sr. Adriana introduced the Two Feet of Love framework: charitable works (immediate needs) and social justice (structural change). SSpS initiatives across provinces—from shelters in Timor-Leste to education for scavenger children in the Kalimantan, Indonesia—demonstrate this commitment. Sr. Petronella deepened the theme of power, naming its manifestations and emphasizing that humility lies in knowing when to step down. The assembly concluded that formation must teach advocacy skills and expose younger sisters to structural engagement, ensuring JPIC truly becomes our way of life.
