What if formation was not about transmitting rules from the top down, but about walking together as companions on a shared journey of discovery?
This was the transformative question explored by the participants of the International Assembly of SSpS Formators during a compelling session led by Sr. Lavina Rodrigues SSpS. A professional counselor and psychologist serving as the formation coordinator for India Central, Sr. Lavina introduced a fresh paradigm for religious life with her topic: “Co-Creating Approach to Formation.”
Grounded in Steffan Surdek’s book, The Way of the Co-Creative Leader, Sr. Lavina outlined a significant shift from a model based on hierarchy and fear to one rooted in intimacy and friendship. This approach is not merely a methodology but a way of being—one that is deeply relational and grounded in mutual respect.
The ultimate model for this vulnerable and authentic way of relating is Jesus, who made himself a companion to those he walked with. In a co-creative framework, transformation unfolds not through instruction alone but through genuine dialogue, deep listening, and naming truths without judgment. It requires openness and a spiritual “attunement” to the Spirit moving within the community.
Three Questions Guiding the Journey
To translate theory into practice, the sisters engaged in small group discussions centered on three pivotal questions designed to align personal vocation with communal ministry:
- Purpose: What is the deeper dream or purpose motivating you in your life and ministry today?
- Identity: Who do you feel called to become as a person and as a formator accompanying others?
- Growth: What are the gaps or areas—even just one or two—in your formation ministry where you feel invited to grow?
