On March 17th, the 6th International Assembly of Formators addressed the critical topic of “Safeguarding in Formation” with Ms. Tina Campbell, a resource person and consultant of the congregation.
The key message was clear: safeguarding is inseparable from authentic human and spiritual development. It is not just about implementing rules, but about forming healthy, mature religious. This means cultivating affective maturity, emotional intelligence, and the capacity for healthy relationships—skills essential for a faithful and safe celibate life.
In today’s world, formation must create a genuine “culture of care” that protects the vulnerable and fosters the emotional well-being needed for a credible vocation.
The main challenge for formators is navigating complex issues—from power imbalances in communities to taboos around discussing sexuality. The response requires self-awareness and courage. Formators must examine their own histories, develop the skills for difficult conversations, and create safe spaces for formandees. By weaving safeguarding into the fabric of formation, communities prepare religious who are not only safe, but truly capable of love and service
