Chronology of Events
On November 4 at 12:30am, I received a call from Sr. Fransiska Imakulata and Sr. Maria Dwei Mere with the news that Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki had erupted violently. It is located on the southeastern part of the island of Flores, Indonesia.
They urgently asked, “Please contact the sisters in Hokeng.” The first person I tried to call was Sr. Nikolin, but it was not possible. I assumed it was due to the poor internet signal caused by the eruption.
I then reached out to Sr. Margaretha Ea to inquire about the postulants. She reported that they were all running to the residence of the diocesan priests in PT Rerolara. Three postulants had fled away from the area. Sr. Nikolin was not with them.
With three trucks accompanied by some sisters, we travelled to Hokeng and arrived around 5:00am. We brought the sisters and student dormitorians to PT Rerolara while organizing their departure to Kewapante.
Around 6:00 AM, some government officials arrived in Hokeng. I requested if I could go and look for Sr. Nikolin who was still missing. Upon arriving, I found her room still smoking, with broken glass scattered everywhere. In some areas of the convent, small fires were still burning. The atmosphere that morning was tense and filled with fear.
We were not allowed to enter the convent further, so the sisters and I went to the clinic to wait. After a while, I was called and informed that Sr. Nikolin had tragically perished in her room due to the fire. With a heavy heart, I shared the devastating news with the sisters while we waited for her body to be evacuated.
Final Moments
According to Sr. Theresia Susila Wati, that night of November 3, the sisters carried on with their usual community activities. Sr. Nikolin led the evening prayer and recreation. They played a board game called Snakes and Ladders. When Sr. Nikolin was losing the game and had to go down the ladder after reaching the top, her reaction was notably calm. Sr. Theresia remarked, “You have no reaction when you have to go down.” Sr. Nikolin simply replied, “It’s just a game to test your patience.”
This moment reflected her calm demeanor and wisdom, which she carried with her even in the simplest of moments.
