The 6th International Assembly of Formators opened with a group dance to celebrate International Women’s Day, setting a tone of unity and joy for the deep work ahead.
Sr. Natalia Tóthová (CLT member), grounded the assembly in the realities of the Congregation. She revisited the six Directions from the 15th General Chapter (2022-2028), inviting formators to reflect on how each one shapes the landscape of initial and ongoing formation.
The Chapter Directions in Real Life
The session brought each direction to life by examining the concrete challenges and responses present in the SSpS world today.
- Passion for God’s Mission: The reality of missionary life was explored through challenges like early returns from missions and the complexity of assigning sisters at Final Vows. Yet, these are met with proactive hope—investing in new frontiers like Congo and creating support networks for newly professed sisters.
- Ecological Conversion: Tying creation to the heart of the Trinity, the discussion called for a tangible lifestyle of simplicity and resourcefulness.
- Community Life: Honest conversations touched on the difficulties of intercultural and intergenerational living, including past hurts and the reality of sisters living alone.
- Spirit of Discernment: A timely reminder addressed the digital world. While acknowledging the influence of Gen Z, Sr. Natalia urged discipline in creating silence and named the need for accountability, including the misuse of social media.
- Collaboration with Laity: The focus was reaffirmed: we are companions, not just colleagues, in mission.
- Redesigning Structures: From merging provinces in Europe to downsizing in Rome, the openness to structural change remains vital.
From Global Realities to Local Questions
The conversation then broadened to include themes from the 2025 Assembly of Provincia/Regional Leaders in Brazil. Issues of nationalism, tribalism, financial sustainability, and new forms of mission presence were highlighted as pressing concerns.
Amidst these challenges, Sr. Natalia also illuminated the Congregation’s blessings: courageous work in human trafficking and prostitution, healing ministries, and the witness of sisters on frontiers.
Seeing and Listening Anew
The afternoon shifted from listening to engaging. A “Gallery Viewing” displayed posters from each province/region, depicting their local formation realities.
This reflective work flowed into “Conversations in the Spirit,” facilitated by Sr. Michaela. This synodal method guided small groups through a three-fold movement: What moved in me? What moved in me as I listened to you? What moved in us?
